Our South Lake Tahoe Weekend Getaway

On last Monday we celebrated Martin Luther King Day here in the U.S. That ment a longer weekend for everyone since the Monday is a day off. Since our kids have for long asked to go somewhere with snow, we decided to drive over to Sierra Nevada Mountains to Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is a popular destination for skiers and other outdoorsy people, and has tons of activities to everyone. For us Lake Tahoe has a special meaning since we got married there in 2011. And even before that I had spent a lot of time vacationing at Lake Tahoe while visiting California from Finland. It was lovely to head back again!

Our trip didnโ€™t start in an ideal way. The night before they had had a big snow storm in the area which led into some road closures. At the same time our little one had gotten ill and we had to give up our dog who was very old and was suffering. That was a big decision and had to be made very fast even though we knew it was coming in the near future. But there just comes a day when you know that the time is right. The timing wasnโ€™t the best but at the same time our trip gave our kids other things to think about. Since our daughter also developed some fever the previous night, our decision of traveling was made in the very last second. I even took our older to school for couple of hours since I was thinking we will have to cancel the trip.

At the end, we decided to travel after all. The roads to Tahoe opened in a middle of the day and just in case, we also packed chains. Our daughters fever went down and she started playing like nothing had ever happened. And we knew that Lake Tahoe has all the services in case it would be something more serious. She ended up being just fine during our trip so Iโ€™m glad we didnโ€™t cancel. We were there just for the dinner time.

This was a rather eventful weekend and I will write a separate post about all the things we did later. At least I would like to tell you about all the option what you can do with kids at Lake Tahoe during the winter. To us the most important thing was to be able to play in the snow. And we had so much even though we didnโ€™t ski this time. We went sledding, made snow men and went ice skating. We also ate well and had some good time with our friends. The kids were so excited to travel together with another family with kids.

I wouldnโ€™t quite call it the winter wonderland since there wasnโ€™t that much snow this time and it was quite slushy. On Saturday the weather was beautiful but the sun quickly melted snow from the trees and it was pretty wet on the streets. But this kind of wet snow is needed if you want to make snow balls and snow men so we definitely took advantage of that.

During the weekend after our little one got better, my husband started to develop a cold. He was very tired and started coughing. Luckily I had packed some medicine, thermometers and other things when we left. First we thought that maybe he was reacting to all the smoke from the casinos but it is already Thursday now and he is still ill. Some these casino hotels on Nevada side can be a little smokey since the law in Nevada allows smoking inside unlike in California. For that reason, I wouldnโ€™t recommend staying in a casino hotel on that side.

Dispite people being ill, roads being closed and loosing our puppy, our weekend turned out to be nice. I know, that sounds harsh, but it was good to get out of the house and have something else to think about. And I think we adults enjoyed the snow as much as our kids did!
