In April we decided to drive down to Southern California to visit some family and explore new places during the spring break.
We drove all the way to Palm Springs and then to Carlsbad, where I have always wanted to visit the beautiful flower fields that bloom during the spring. There is only a short window to see them and the best bloom is between late March and April.
Carlsbad is fairly far from where we live and we usually fly abroad during the spring break. But now, we had an opportunity to go see the famous Flower Fields which were only a couple hour drive away from Palm Springs, and of course we went.
Carlsbad is a small city on the coast of California right above San Diego. It is not only known for its beautiful Flower Fields, but it is also home to the popular Legoland Park. In fact, Legoland is located right next to the Flower Fields. So if you choose the right month to visit, you could visit both of them on the same trip.
Carlsbad belongs to San Diego county and it takes about a half hour to drive over to downtown San Diego, and about two hours from Los Angeles.

Carlsbad by the Sea Hotel is the best hotel in a walking distance from the Flower Fields!
THE FLOWER FIELDS OF CARLSBAD
The Flower Fields of Carlsbad have a long history, since the flowers were first grown about 84 years ago.
A young man named Luther Gage moved to Oceanside next to the city of Carlsbad and brought some ranunculus (Tecolote Giant Ranunculus) seeds with him. He started farming flowers next to Frank Frazee’s farm and eventually got Frank interested in flower growing as well.
At the same time, Frank started teaching his son Edwin some farming skills, and Edwin also ended up growing ranunculus flowers. He worked with flowers all the way until he retired.
During his life Edwin moved several times and ended up partnering with a farmer named Paul Ecke Junior. Paul is the one who finally opened up the flower fields in Carlsbad to visitors and developed a business around it it.
And that is the short version of how the Flower Fields of Carlsbad were born.

After both Edwin and Paul passed, the Flower Fields are now managed and maintained by the Armstrong Garden Center. Around 100,000 to 200,000 people visit the Flower Fields yearly.
The visitors can actually still see 13 different ranunculus flowers developed by Paul Ecke Junior. Among the ranunculus, there is also a Historical Poinsettia Display. Before ever getting into ranunculus growing, the Ecke family was successfully growing poinsettias, so it was only natural to show them off too.
Visiting the Flower Fields
When planning a visit to the Carlsbad Flower Fields make sure to purchase your tickets beforehand online. There is no ticket sales at the door. Also, there is no separate fee for parking but the reservation system takes a small processing fee.
When driving to the area, be aware that if you just look for the Flower Fields in Carlsbad from Google Maps, you will end up in the apartment complex with the same name. We made this mistake and were pretty confused when we pulled up in front of some condos. There were no flowers anywhere!
Luckily, it wasn’t too far from the actual Flower Fields and we still had time to make it to the time slot given in our tickets. But if you are going, make sure to use the actual address given below.
When we arrived, there were no lines to get in and the entrance was very smooth. And soon we were in the middle of the most amazing, colorful flowers.

They had brought in some benches and other props at the end of the flower sections where people could sit and pose for their photos. They even had an old, rustic tractor!

If you get tired of walking around, you can buy a ticket and hop on a tractor tour. I actually recommend this, since it’s a great way to see everything on the fields and it’s also great fun for the kids.
The main attraction is of course the actual flower fields and photo spots. But at the entrance area there is also other things to see and do.
There are multiple gardens with designated photo spots, a restaurant, and a very fun playground for kids. Our kids loved seeing the big bird cages with pigeons and zebra finches. In one corner of the field they have a huge American Flag of Flowers and an orchid greenhouse.
This year they will also do a Butterfly Encounter with real butterflies. And you can try finding some gemstones by using sluicing just like the gold panners used to do in old days.
They also had a sweet pea maze and some blueberry picking. Unfortunately for us though, blueberry picking was so popular that they actually ran out of blueberries!
Some of these special activities have an extra fee.

And since it is a flower farm, of course there is also an opportunity to buy some flowers too. In our case our vacation was just beginning and we were on our way back to Palm Springs for several days, so unfortunately we had to leave the beautiful ranunculus to others.
But we enjoyed seeing them and seeing the amazing fields full of them!
Best time to visit Carlsbad Flower Fields
The Flower Fields are open from March 1st to May 10th. Depending on the weather the best time to see the flowers, and the peak of the bloom, is usually from the end of the March to end of April.
If you are able to visit the fields in a middle of the week and right when it opens (or little after that), you will be able to avoid most crowds.
Weekends are the most busiest time at the Flower Fields but even then there is plenty of space to walk around and take photos. Their reservation system also makes sure that the place is never too packed.
The flowers will slowly start to wither away in the beginning of May. After the ranunculus bloom is over the flowers are left to die in the field so they can produce seeds and re-grow later.
🌸🌸🌸
There are so many fun things to do and see in San Diego but a visit to Carlsbad Flower Fields is definitely a unique one. There are nothing like it elsewhere in Southern California unless you are ready to drive up north. In Northern California you can see the beautiful sunflower fields or almond trees blooming.
Among the Flower Fields, you should go see the Old Town San Diego, Legoland and some beaches. And if you are a movie geek, then maybe even tour around some of the Top Gun filming locations.
I think the Carlsbad Flower Fields are California’s version of the world famous tulip fields in the Netherlands. They are definitely worth visiting!

Hi! I´ll be in San Diego during the last week of February and would love to visit the flower field. Would it be possible to visit it at this period or really only in March? Thanks!
Unfortunately, I think it might be too early because the flowers are not blooming yet in February. They open officially in March 1st in 2026.
Wow! If I would describe Paradise, it would be like this. It would be so nice to be surrounded by all these flowers. I can just imagine how fragrant the air can be as well. They really, really look beautiful. Thank you for sharing this and will add it on my bucket list.
Thank you Clarice! It really was a special place.
This would be a dream trip for me. Seeing Tulips have always given me a high because they are so beautiful in all their colors. They are not only refreshing but also add to the happiness factor. Thanks for making my morning.
These flowers were ranunculus but they are equally beautiful to tulips.
Your post reminds me of Tulip Festival In Kashmir. What a beautiful set of pictures. My mind felt so good just by looking at these flower fields.
I haven’t heard of the one in Kashmir but I know the Netherlands have amazing tulip fields too.
This would be my dream! First, ranunculus is one of my favourite flowers and to see them in a field with all their 13 varieties- it would be heavenly. I love, love, love that you had the opportunity to do this. Maybe if I am ever in California, I would definitely do this.
Thank you Renee! I hope you get to visit the Flower Fields someday!
Wow. This is awesome. I’m always in love with beautiful flower fields. Good to know this one is open. Yes, when a place is a bit far away it is indeed difficult to plan. Glad you got the opportunity this time. Good to know it is just beside Legoland. My gal would love that.
Yes, me too. I think my girls would love to visit Legoland too. I hope to take them over someday.
I am so lucky to live 15 minutes from the flower fields and seem to always forget about them. This was such a great reminder, I am off work this Friday and am for sure going to stop by and then treat myself to lunch. They used to be bigger but sold the land at the top of the field for the hotel after Legoland was built, sad.
Oh wow, I didn’t know about that it used to be bigger. That is sad! I would love to live closer and visit every year.
Oh my God! Those flowers look so amazing and pretty. I would go crazy taking so many pictures around this place. I have added Carlsbad to my list and I will make sure I visit it when I am in California. And I will make sure plan during the spring season for sure.
Definitely! I hope you make it there soon!
Omg, these flower fields are so beautiful! What a wonderful photo opportunity. So cool that you had this opportunity.
Yes, we had so much fun during this trip.
I love that view of the flowers in Carlsbad! A good reminder that the season is not yet finished. And a better note not to follow Google Maps to the apartment complex! I am sure my spirits would be instantly lifted standing in the middle of all of that colour. A good reason to visit in the spring.
Thank you Linda! Yes, they are still open and you still have time to go.
