We Went Glamping in Finland – Peltomäki Resort

Have you ever tried glamping? We went glamping in Finland with our family and this what our luxury tent was like.

Once again we spent our summer in Finland visiting friends and family. During our time there we experienced both heath waves and cold rains, and thunder storms. We enjoyed the local foods and sauna culture, and especially our stay at a summer cottage.

But this summer we also got invited to Peltomäki Resort to review their new glamping tents. So of course, we were excited to do that. This also gave us a reason to do a little road trip in Finland and step out of our cottage a little.

So we hopped in our car and headed to our next adventure.

Note! Unfotunately Peltomäki Resort has closed their business in 2023 but Telttaillen still offers glamping tents elsewhere in Finland.

PELTOMÄKI RESORT IN FINLAND

In the beginning of our summer, we got invited to try out glamping at Peltomäki Resort. Peltomäki Resort is a camping area in Ylöjärvi, close to the city of Tampere.

They just started offering glamping opportunities among the traditional camping spots for tents and RVs. The area is absolutely beautiful as it is right by a lake and surrounded by a forest. Peltomäki Resort also rents cabins for those who are not into sleeping in a tent.

For a while now, our kids have been asking to go camping, so they were super excited when we told them about going to Peltomäki Resort. They have been practising on our backyard and tried sleeping in a regular tent there.

But nothing really beats a comfy bed and warm blankets that the glamping tents offer. I myself haven’t gone camping since I was a kid, so this was a great way for me to gradually get back to sleeping in a tent. And I must admit, I was quite excited to try it out too!

Peltomäki Resort was a perfect place for our first glamping experience. We got the key to our tent and some information from the main building reception.

They also had a nice, little restaurant there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Showers and bathrooms were in the maintenance building where they also had fresh water fountains and a microwave oven.

Closer to the lake they had a picnic spot for those who like to barbeque, and a sauna. Unfortunately, we arrived too late for the sauna and swimming that evening, but it looked very tempting.

WHAT IS GLAMPING AND WHAT WAS OUR EXPERIENCE LIKE?

The word glamping is a combination of “glamorous” and “camping”. It sums up perfectly what glamping is about. It is camping, but with better amenities than normal, and in some cases even with luxury tents.

Even though the word is relatively knew, and glamping has just recently become extremely popular, the concept has been around for centuries. Probably one of the most famous glamping sites are the safaris in Africa.

Glamping is mostly done in tents, but sometimes also in yurts, tiipiis, pods or even tree houses. They seem to be getting very popular back home in the U.S., for example in Utah and Arizona.

We did stay a night in a wigwam in Arizona once, which is a more permanent tiipii made out of concrete. I think it would qualify somewhere between glamping and staying in a hotel. But especially our kids loved the experience!

At Peltomäki Resort the luxury tents were in two rows in two different areas of the camping site. The tent village had been set up there by a company called Telttaillen .

Our tent was the very first one in the row and since it was the beginning of the season, our neighbouring tents seemed to be empty. We got to enjoy a very quiet night with only noises from the nature.

The summer nights in Finland are amazing, since the sun doesn’t go down at all, and everything is so green and lush.

Our tent was nice. It was big enough for us to stand in and move around. It also didn’t have too much furniture, so it didn’t feel cluttered.

The tent had a double bed, extra mattress for our daughter, two chairs, two night stands, a table and a coat hanger. They all fit in nicely. We thought it was quite beautifully decorated too.

We as a family of four and our two big bags were able to fit in to the tent very well.

I think with any camping experience, and also in glamping, the weather plays a big role. Even though it was beautiful and sunny outside that night, it was actually quite chilly. Luckily, we had brought some warm clothes with us and the blankets in the tent were thick.

I later heard that they provide heaters for the tents too, but we didn’t know about it at the time. And we were able to get some sleep by dressing up warm and bundling up in the blankets.

I think the best part of the whole experience was to wake up in the middle of the nature, while birds were singing. We could feel the fresh air in our tent and smell the trees close by.

The camping site was surprisingly quiet in the morning even though there were other people there too.

Our kids absolutely loved this experience and we all thought it was a fun thing to do as a family. I could definitely try glamping again, especially on warmer nights.

We have been fortunate to try out some other unique accommodations in Finland, such a birdhouse in Herrankukkaro and a prison hotel in Helsinki. And I can definitely recommend them both!

I know those who love camping will argue this with me, but nothing can beat a good, comfy bed… so if I can choose glamping over camping, I probably will!
