Experiencing History at the Rothschild-Pound House Inn

The Rothchild-Pound House Inn in Columbus, GA is a historic Victorian B&B with cozy rooms, rich history and true Southern hospitality.

Many of you have asked us for accommodation tips when traveling in the United States, and truth be told, those truly memorable places aren’t always easy to find. Quite often we all end up in a chain hotels where every room looks exactly the same.

Over the years, however, we have made it a habit to check wether there are any Bed & Breakfasts or more unique hotels nearby. Whenever they fit both our needs and budget, we always go for those instead.

On one of our trips through the state of Georgia, we discovered a real gem that we instantly fell in love with, and one that we’d gladly recommend to fellow travelers: The Rothchild-Pound House Inn.

This charming B&B operates in beutifully restored Victorian building in the city of Columbus, and it brought a wonderful touch of history to our journey.

The Historic City of Columbus

We ended up in Georgia and the city of Columbus in particular, because of one my husband’s work trips that take him all around the United States. While he was tied up with meetings, I had plenty of time to wander around and explore.

Columbus is home to about 200,000 people and it sits on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about a 90-minute drive from Atlanta. It’s actually the second largest city n Georgia, named after none other than explorer Christopher Columbus.

We stayed in the older part of the city, where it was a delight just to stroll past rows of historic Victorian homes. We have a lot of them back home in San Francisco, so it was nice to see how they were kept and painted on the other side of the country.

Our inn was also very close to the river, where the scenic Chattahoochee Riverwalk made the perfect place to stretch our legs and soak in the atmosphere. We even crossed the river and made a quick visit to the state of Alabama.

Not far from our inn, I stumbled upon another fascinating spot while wondering around during the day, admiring the old houses. To my surprise, I found a sign marking The Pemberton House.

Amidst the colorful and ornate Victorian homes stood a small, modest white cottage which was once home to none other than Dr. John Stith Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola.

Dr. Pemberton, who was a pharmacist, originally created the recipe as a medicinal tonic, right here in Columbus. From that early formula, the world-famous drink we all today was born.

Pemberton’s House is now preserved as a historic site. Since it’s in private use, visitors can’t go inside, but the property is still maintained by The Coca-Cola Company.

Our stay at The Rothchild-Pound House Inn turned out to be the cosiest Bed & Breakfast experience. Its main building, a stunning Victorian home from the 1870s, is also a designated historic landmark.

The main house has fur guest rooms in total, and the property also includes a few charming cottages perfect for larger groups.

One of our favorite details was the large front porch, complete with old-fashioned rocking chairs. It was the perfect reminder that we were truly in the American South.

In the evenings, the innkeeperts, Garry and Mamie, served wine and small bites in the main house. Before heading out to dinner, we would sit on the living room sofa by the crackling fireplace with a glass of wine in hand. The atmosphere was simply wonderful!

We stayed in the James L.Read Suite, located on the top floor of the main house. The entire room was decorated deep red tones, giving it a wonderfully old-fashioned feel.

One wall featured a working fireplace with its original marble mantel dating back to house’s construction. Even the wallpaper kept the historic vibe, as it was a reproduction of the late 1800s patterns.

And the turquoise bathroom, styled after the 1920s, was absolutely charming.

A couple of nights in this room went by far too quickly. There was something so special about climbing up the creaky old staircase to our room and sinking into the sofa bed at the end of the day.

The Rothchild-Pound House Inn actually reminded me a lot of the Seven Wives Inn in Utah, where we stayed in one of our road trips. That inn got its name from a Mormon man who used to hide there with his seven wives!

On this trip, we also visited Atlanta. and toured the historic Stately Oaks Plantation, a house tied to the story of Gone With the Wind. Along the way, we stopped at a few other historic sites too, and even a national park. Georgia really does have so much see!
