On our trip to Japan we visited a Moomin Cafe located at the Tokyo Dome. The Moomin Bakery & Cafe was a fun experience and especially our 4 year old daughter who enjoyed it a lot.

Now, for those who might not be familiar, Moomin is a beloved cartoon that originated from Finland and has gained massive popularity in Japan in recent years.

And if you have been following our blog, you probably know that I was born and raised in Finland. So Moomin characters have always held a special place in my heart – and now, they’re a beloved part of my family’s life too.

So, what is the deal with the Moomin Cafe then, you might ask? Well, it’s all about ensuring that no guest feels lonely. As you enjoy your meal, different Moomin characters make the rounds at your table, adding an extra dose of charm to your dining experience.

Moomins are friendly little trolls who look almost like hippos, and live in the Moomin Valley with their friends.

Our Experience of The Moomin Cafe in Tokyo

Our visit to the Moomin Cafe fell right between breakfast and lunch, but that didn’t stop us from indulging in some delightful treats from their bakery. And let me tell you, almost everything there was Moomin-themed – from cheese pies to chocolate cakes.

Even the decor of the cafe had us feeling like we’d been transported to Finland, surrounded by Moomins at every turn. Our daughter even got to wear the Moominpappa’s hat for a bit – talk about a photo op!

Our daughter was lucky enough to got to wear Moominpappa's top hat for a while in the Moomin Cafe in Tokyo.
The lunch menu at Moomin Cafe in Tokyo had Moomin themed foods and deserts.

The menu at the Moomin Cafe looked quite fun. They had several warm foods mainly with rice and some pasta dishes. They also had a salad buffet with traditional Finnish rye bread. I do wish we would have gotten there just a tiny bit later to have a proper lunch but their pastries were quite filling too.

Our coffees had Moomin characters on top and they came with little Moomin. I ate one of the cheese pies and a star shaped pastry that they usually serve in Finland at Christmas time. They were all pretty good.

Before leaving the Moomin Cafe, we couldn’t resist stopping by the souvenir shop tucked inside. They had everything from Moomin mugs to books and keychains. I was really tempted to by some Moomin pasta (yep, you read that right!), but our backpacks were already bursting at the seams.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the Moomin Cafe and the Tokyo Dome – there’s something for everyone, from thrilling rides to charming shops and restaurants. We walked around for a while in the area and I daughter tried out their carousel.

Tokyo is amazing with kids because there is just so much to do there. We had a lot of fun visiting the Legoland Discovery Center and the Trick Art Museum in Odaiba. Our daughter also loved all different theme cafes we found.

I heard that there was also another Moomin Cafe but I couldn’t find much information about it. Our itinerary for Japan was already pretty full so we decided to skip it. But we did visit a cute Hello Kitty Cafe in Himeji and a Kawaii Monster Cafe which we really enjoyed.

On our next visit to Japan we definitely want to visit the Moominvalley Park. It is a theme park just like the Moominworld Park in Finland.

As we said our farewell to the Tokyo Moomin Cafe and set off for our next adventure in Tokyo, we couldn’t help but reflect on the magic of our Moomin-filled experience.

So, whether you’re a die-hard Moomin fan or simply just looking for a unique lunch experience in Tokyo, be sure to add the Tokyo Moomin Cafe to your itinerary. Trust us, you won’t regret it!
