Before our trip to Japan we had never heard of a Trick Art Museum. It was such an interesting idea that when we saw the museum, we just knew that we had to go in there.
One of the days in Japan we decided to do something less hectic but still fun for kids. So we headed to the island of Odaiba to Legoland Discovery Center. While we were there, we discovered the Trick Art Museum and went in to see what it was all about.
And we are glad we found the museum because we had such a great time there. Both of the places are located inside the Tokyo Beach Island Mall. There are also many stores and restaurants in the same building.
One can get to Odaiba by taking a local train. Odaiba itself would be an interesting place to visit already. It is an island originally built for defense purposes, but it is now full of entertainment like malls and amusement parks.
What is the Trick Art Museum About?
The idea in this museum is that the visitors will participate in the art and create illusions by taking photos with them. Many of them are 3D images, and you will have to find the right angles and lights to make the trick work in your photo.
Trick art was first developed by Kazumune Kenjyu who trademarked it and then started a production of trick art with his company in 1984.
The first Trick Art Museum was opened in 1991, and the one in Odaiba opened in July 2011. Many of the photos in Odaiba museum will take you back in the Japanese history, to Edo era.
When we arrived to the museum, a staff member showed us what we should do and how to create the photos, and then we headed out on our tour.
Next to every painting they also had instructions on how to take a photo in order to make the illusion work. Some were easier to do than others, and sometimes we ended up moving forward since people behind us were waiting.
But we did manage to catch some good ones. Or what do you think?

Meny of the art pieces had animals in them.

Some of our favorites were the different kinds of funny paintings you could interact with.

Our Trick Art Museum Review
We had so much fun trying to catch a perfect photo at Trick Art Museum. We really liked it. It was great fun for both; kids and adults.
However, the museum is not huge so it will only take couple of hours to walk through it. I don’t think I would travel over to Odaiba just for the Trick Art Museum but you can easily combine it something else, like a visit to the Legoland Discovery Center.
The museum is located at a mall and there is a lot of fun things to do there. They also have many interesting shops and restaurants there, so you can easily spend a whole day there.
If possible, I would recommend going to the Trick Art Museum in a middle of the day and to avoid weekends. That way, it will be less crowded and you will have more time to take photos when there are no people behind you.
In overall, I definitely recommend a visit to Trick Art Museum if you are close by.

During our two weeks in Japan we did many fun things but the Trick Art Museum was one of our favorites. Among visiting different theme cafes, petting a deer in Nara and seeing a geisha, our daughter still remembers the photos from the museum.
Another great thing to do while in Japan!
